CAVITIES

How do I help my child prevent cavities?

Good oral health starts young.

Ensuring you brush your child’s teeth with a smear of toothpaste at least twice a day begins the
healthy mouth journey. We recommend not using fluoride toothpaste until your child is about two years old
and can spit the fluoride out rather than swallowing.

A common cause of tooth decay in children
is giving them a bottle in bed. This should be avoided because the sugar from milk sits on your
child’s teeth at night and ends up dissolving enamel and potentially causing cavities. Water is a
better option when it comes to bedtime. You can also reduce the amount of sugar and
carbohydrates you feed your child to help prevent cavities.
